Getting my hands on my uncles old Cyklon 300. Yes, I know they’re a PIA to service but I am consistently confused on the difference between the 300 and 5000. He bought em in 2002. Very excited and accept the slight annoyances that I might run into.

Does the difference come down to the balancing of the 1st stage or are there any differences in the 2nd stage as well? I know the reg ports is different for the VERY old ones.

The 5000 has a standard, balanced first stage; the 300, unbalanced, so-called "compensated." The second stages remain the same. @rsingler can fully service all Poseidon equipment -- and service it well.

Of the two, I have always preferred the 300s over later models, for their wear and simplicity -- fewer o-rings and the use of Teflon gaskets for the ports, in the 2980s (though not with the later 2940), which could last a decade or more.

They were my first regulators, over thousands of dives; were and are dirt simple to service -- and I would not think twice about using them in any climate, over much of the overbuilt and fiddly crap of today . . .

Thank you. Is it true I shouldn’t use 3500PSI tanks on the 300? I see so much mixed information.

No, that "300" designation referred to the Cyklon's original pressure rating -- of 300 bar (4350 psi), far beyond that of any US tanks or regs of the time; though that was exclusively for use with its DIN fittings and not the optional screw-on yoke, which was only rated to 200 bar (2900 psi), typical for US tanks of the 1970s. The newer, heavier yoke is officially rated to 232 bar (3442 psi), though we have used them, in a pinch, at higher pressures.

A DIN conversion can be also be fitted for modern 3500 tanks, since those earlier European valves were somewhat shallower . . .

The old conversion kit from 200 to 300 bar use was 2965; but we later cobbled together the separate bits, long after we could no longer find that kit . . .
