I refer to squid in the Humboldt size-class as "big". The designation of "giant" belongs to the sea monster-sized species we have such a hard time studying.

Although in the Gulf of Mexico, "big squid" are the largest ones we have. No Architeuthis or its ilk in our pond.

My understanding is that the Humboldt is a member of the family of 'giant squid'...though a couple of meters in length isn't exactly 'giant'.

Perhaps. My understanding is that when one says "giant squid", or as the headline said, "Giant Squid", the image conjured in many minds is that of Architeuthus. Humboldts are big, but I have never heard them referred to as anything but big (and somewhat aggressive).

I think the reason they called them "giant squid" was so that the headline would attract more interest than one that simply stated that some "squid" had washed ashore.

Media sensationalism . . . a common, everyday occurrence.

My point exactly. Sloppy American journalism...don't let the truth get in the way of a good story...

Years ago I worked for my small, hometown newspaper.

Talking about having to hype something to make it readable . . . geesh !!!!
And everyone wanted his or her picture on the front page with his or her GIANT hydrangea (spelling - not too good with plants) bush.

Kind of like trying to make front page news of Barney Fife giving a parking ticket.
