We were in the sea of Cortez trolling for dorado when all our lines started popping..as soon as I brought a line in it was released but the large lure was shredded...we realized a school of giant squid were swarming our boat at over 7knots!...We brought in all lines and changed to our squid jigs we'd brought from Monterey CA...we stopped the boat to fish, my son was holding his rod with a jig on it over the side (but not in the water) he asked me, "how do I fish for these"...just then I saw tenacales reach out of the water and grab his jig, the fight was on!...we fought and landed 4 squid, enough to eat and share with our group, then we stopped.

We anchored that night in a shallow cove off Danzte Isle...in the morning there were hundreds of squid that had beached themselves during the night..no one went swimming after dark, because of the squid, not sharks were the worry..

Here in Monterey we take the boat out to 2,000 feet. We drop the jigs in to around 800' and start jigging..once the squid attack the rest of them follow the caught squid to the surface..then you can catch them withing a couple feet of the surface...these guys have beaks larger than my parrots and the tenacles have a set of hooks and the suckers look like mini jaws...got to really respect them...

Giant Squid is Archeteuthus. That isn't what you encountered in the Sea of Cortez. What you have there is a Humboldt Squid. Not the same thing. Humboldt Squid are encountered pretty regularly. Giant Squid (and their cousins Colossal Squid) are rarely to never encountered. To my knowledge, a giant squid has only been caught alive once and caught on film alive one other time. Colossals are caught occasionally in the arctic circle, but usually found dead on the beach.

The video is not very clear in its narration. Are there two kinds of squids (Humboldt's and Archi's), or just different sized Humboldt's?

Where did this "108 foot long" comment come from at the end of the video? Is that the squid that tried to eat the camera?

Guess I'll have to wait for the IMAX movie next summer.

I didn't see the trailer before...

I don't know about you, Arch, but if they are saying they found a 108 ft humboldt, I say they better have some good support for that....guess I'll have to wait and see the IMAX....

Hey guys!!

The one with the camera is a Humbolt squid. The one that tried to eat the one with the camera is the big one. Im not sure how they came up with the size esitmates, I guess I will have to watch the show.

It will be on History Channel on Nov 14th.

I saw some of the footage and its a massive size squid, Im not sure what kind it is though.

They werent real clear...the squid attacking the swimmer was humbolt as were the schools we saw in the sea of Cortez and the ones we catch here in Monterey fishing...I had it explained to me that they two varieties are both squid but different types like all dogs are canine but not all dogs are german shepards...this made it a little easier for a dummy like me to grasp...lol
