I'm pretty sold on getting to Drake Bay to dive Cano Island in Costa Rica now based on what I've read so far. Thinking of doing it in October or November.

For those of you who have been there, have any of you ever driven to Drake Bay from San Jose? I know that most would take a commuter plane there but if it's much cheaper to rent a car, I might go that route.

Also, what are recommended places to stay in that area - I don't need top luxury accommodations, just basic and clean will do.

It would take at least 7-8hours to drive to drake bay from san jose. The roads are not great and going around the mountains there are a lot of twists and turns so speed is hard to get. You would need a 4x4 if going to the drake bay area as sometimes roads get washed out and you drive through a small river. Manual Antonio from San Jose take 3-4 hours. Flying is much better as why waste 2 days of driving when the flight is 2 hours each way.

I will second that. As much as you want to save money by driving, the months of September and October are the rainiest months so there may be a chance that the roads will be very difficult so save yourself a royal headache and fly. Try pirates cove or Alguila de osa.
