Hi,

I just got back from FL, did some snorkeling (as I have in the past) and decided that the NEXT time I visit, I'm going to be one step away from certification!!

I'm in no rush, and am looking for advice on where to take classes, how much to expect to pay, etc.

I think that I'd likely take all the pool and classroom stuff here, and then do open water somewhere fun.

I've been reading "Scuba diving explained", so I have some appreciation for some of the risks, and techniques that will be required.

On question is, I have a mask that's comfortable, a snorkel that works fine, and some inexpensive Fins (US Divers). Is that enough to start, or should I be thinking...upgrade. My mask was purchased in 1992 at a dive shop in the Keys, so it's a bit old, but works....

Thanks
Ron

If it works don't fix it. Basic equipment for basic diving need not be expensive to be effective. If you have free diving fins you may need to replace those for something that will give you a better ability to move scuba gear through the water. A plain old snorkle without all the bells and whistles is all that is needed.

Look around on scubaboard and you will find threads about picking out an instructor or diveshop to work with for your training.

You actually have better equipment than what I certified in. Keep it until you learn more. The dealer may offer you a package deal afte training.

But go ahead and do your OW in Santa Rosa NM. You'll need to go there to practice from time to time anyway. I still do.
