I am blessed with a wife who takes diving and sailing much more seriously than her hair and nails. She does do her nails occasionally in the winter, almost never in the summer and keeps them fairly short. She wears her hair in a 3/4" buzz cut (she once made a mistake a did it with the 1/2" blade after shearing one of the kids). She used to wear it longer, but got tired of the hassle.

I thought he said she was going to skip the manicure, not the diving?

Ooooooops sorry people, I got it the wrong way......

 :)

You're right, you NEVER want to rip a nail from it's bed! Been there, done that! I detached 90% of my thumbnail at work and if that wasn't painful enough I sanitized it with rubbing alcohol, BIG MISTAKE!!! That's a mucous membrane under the nail and dumping rubbing alcohol on it takes pain to a whole new level! Put it this way, I broke a toe once and didn't notice but nearly passed out from the pain after dousing my ripped nail with the alcohol--YEEEEOOOUUCH!

Nails look so much better without the polish anyway.

I'd have to totaly agree....and when it comes to women and make-up..I really only think natural colors and it being lightly applied looks good if she really wants it on. I personally think you women look better most of the time without it.

but i see even more men trailing like puppies after perfectly made-up, perfectly polished, perfectly nipped-tucked-and-botoxed bottle blondes.

<sigh> i'll never be one of them. my compromise: my toenails are always polished, even on dive trips. though often in silly colors. baby blue looks sooo good in the water :)

I'll admit that I like a beautiful woman just as much as the next guy...but I find a woman that isn't afraid to get a little dirty, windblown, wet (stay with me here) even more attractive than a woman who wouldn't go near anything that even looks like it may mess up her nails/hair/ect. I'd prefer a real woman to a simple trophy any day! :)

You missed the whole point. Women do these things to impress other women not men. It is sort of their way of having it out behind the barn to see who is the strongest.

with some men. heck, my father used to say that before his daughters were old enough to disabuse him of the notion :)

my view: a woman wants to look her best for herself, to make herself proud. just as a woman wants to excel in business, academically, in sports, art, or wherever her talents lie.

that's simplistic, but you get the idea. a silly example: lately my obsession has been push-ups. in september, a few girl push-ups were all i could manage. now i'm up to 35 boy push-ups (okay, okay, in two sets :)) but every time i eke out another, i feel so strong -- and successful. because i'm achieving a goal :)

back to beauty: every woman has a different idea of what's beautiful. many seem to feel that their natural selves aren't good enough, that they have to resort to cosmetic, surgical and other methods.

seems a shame to me. but as ladycute1 said, that's just one woman's opinion....

I had my nails done for about six months, because my dive buddy (aka my dad) was working weird shifts. Now hes working days 8-4:30 with weekends off which matches my schedule perfectly, so it was off with the nails, I'm going diving!:)
