I don't know if this would work, but has anyone considered using an ELT (emergency locate transmiter) like those used in general aviation? It could be put in a dry case during the dive and activated at the surface if needed.

Providing you're able to do it (gas supply etc) .. tie off. I would think they'd start there (where you were lost) and try to predict current flows to find you.

You can already buy dive rated EPIRBs.

I see the McMurdo ones, but the dive cfannister looks quite large, and is the actual transmitter water resistant on the surface?

I would:
1)drift with the current with a max inflated BCD and a fully inflated SMB;
2)stay alive to spite the clown who left me and to beat him severely when I return;
3)keep a sharp lookout for animals that could hurt me, i.e. jellyfish, sharks, barracuda ( I dont care what you say, I do not like those raggedly toothed suckers);
and finally 4)pray like it was Sunday morning and I was late for church.

You can get oil filled ones suitable for diving. They are quite large and do sometimes leak/flood.

Generally used by expedition divers or those a long long way offshore for emergencies.

After watching the last segement of "I should not be alive", I think an air powered horn, mirror and a flare (led from powerflare.com) are on my list of must haves.

The air horn works great! Make sure you get the screechy one that only works above the water, where the directions say to submerge "your head before using"

The dual mode (above and below) and underwater-only horns aren't loud enough.
