A holidaymaker from Germany was killed on a diving trip in the sea off Mallorca on Tuesday. According to a report from MM's sister newspaper "Ultima Hora", the tragic incident occurred in the waters off the seaside resort of Cala Rajada (Capdepera) in the north-east of the island.

The 63-year-old German took part in a dive on Tuesday morning that was offered by a local diving school. For reasons that are still unknown, the man suddenly lost consciousness underwater, according to newspaper reports .

Employees of the organizers and fellow divers quickly brought the unconscious German to the port of Cala Rajada, but any help came too late, local police chief Sebastià Morey told the local newspaper. Rescue workers nevertheless tried to revive the injured man using life-saving measures.

The emergency doctor could only issue the death certificate. Meanwhile, investigators from the Guardia Civil began investigating the case. An autopsy is due to be carried out on the German's body in the coming hours, and the police hope that the results will provide information about the circumstances of the accident.

The last known diving accident with a fatal outcome occurred in Mallorca almost exactly four years ago. Back then, on August 10, 2020, a 31-year-old Spaniard lost consciousness underwater off Sant Elm (Andratx). Just four weeks earlier, a diver from the Czech Republic was affected.
