I am a new diver that is looking into buying gear. I found a package online at scubatoys with a Mares BC and genesis atlas reg with a React computer. I have heard good things about the react and used a mares BC in training but im not sure about the reg. I will be diving exclusivly in warm water (I live in south florida, 2 minutes from the beach :)). I see a lot of recommendations for the Apeks line, but most talk about the cold water features , which I wont need. I am a very active swimmer and snorkeler and I cant believe its taken me this long to get certified. I plan on diving a lot so I want gear that will last and progress as i do. I also would prefer a package deal as that seems the easiest. Thanks!

I have heard good things concerning the Genesis regs. I have purchased equipment through Scuba Toys and their prices are decent but not outstanding.
Genesis gets good marks from Rodales-that doesn't mean everything but it means something.
Just because a reg works well in cold water(Apeks) doesn't mean it's exclusively a cold water reg. It's ability to function in ANY dive environment is probably the trademark feature of the Apeks line. In addition, they are easy to service, rugged, and good breathers.......and they are relatively inexpenisve-very important feature.
I bought an Apeks TX50 with the TX40 octo and it was $319.00 at DiveInn(this was the DST first stage-swivel design). You can get the TX40 for even less as a primary-not much difference except for the second stage adjustment.
I can't say anything concerning the React computer. I own a Suunto Cobra and really like it. Suunto computers are conservative but they won't lock you out if you violate the settings, they have user replaceable batteries and you can get one at DiveInn for what(I'm guessing here) it would cost to get the React in the States.

Have fun

Diveshooter,

I bought 3 complete Genesis setups a little over a year ago (Valor Regs and Nitrox Resource Computers). They may be economy regs, but they're light, have a small profile, and they breathe as easy at 130 fsw as at 15 fsw (84F to 55F). Two of the regs have nearly 100 dives each and have had no problems.

I hear the two button React is more convenient to use than the one button Resource (I have to watch the screen scroll a lot). I don't care for the computer defaulting to 50% O2, but for less than $200, I can put up with resetting it between dives.

For inexpensive equipment, I think it's holding up quite well.

Also, compare the prices on www.leisure-pro.com

I believe all current Genesis regs are piston first stages with various second stages. Their first stages have one moving part, a piston, with two o rings and a seat. Not much to go wrong there. Their Atlas and GS2000 have environmentally sealed first stages like the Sherwoods. (Even if you'll never dive coldwater, this is a plus on first stage wear. A reg that keeps out the cold also keeps out grit, sand, etc) One of their regs recently received high marks in a Rodale's test, (although I personally do not put too much stock in this type of report. I prefer to talk with owners, diveshops and actually USE THEM and THEN make my own assessments). Genesis is great for standing behind their products. Good luck with your choice.
