First and foremost I want to introduce myself. I am 21 and i got my open water cert in December and am totally ready to get into diving. I know that diving is not a sport but more of a lifestyle and so i am excited to part of such a adventurous community! I look forward to learning a lot from you guys and maybe even running into some of you on dive trips!

There is a guy who is local and is selling his Genesis Atlas for $50. It's brand new and never used and I know that it sells for about $200 on the net, wondering if i should get it as my primary reg. I know for that for $50 its a steal but i am not sure what kind of rep the Atlas has. Read some threads here and most people say that they are just Okay and are relatively robust and dependable. For a first timer, is this reg okay? I just dont wanna die for buying a junk reg. :) Also, could i theoretically use this as an octopus?

thanks for the input!

First of all:

Welcome to :sblogo: :newbie:

LOL J/K...

Anyway back to the question at hand.....Even though the regulator is new....when was it bought? If it has been in the box for a good length of time, It really would need to be inspected before use(which adds to the $50 cost) Also, some brands offer parts for life etc as an added bonus. I am not familiar with this regulator specifically, however, MOST regulators can be used as an octo. Im sure someone who has actually used one will chime in on their use. Hope this helps....

It's a pretty decent regulator and at $50 it is a steal. They sell for $179 on LesurePro. All of the Genesis gear is pretty good stuff. The Atlas is a solid regulator that should last a good while for you. I'd say go for it!

If you do buy please take it to a shop and have them look it over. If it's been sitting in a box for a while it may need a little service before you dive it.

Good luck and for $50 you can't go wrong even if you have to pay for a total overhaul.

The Atlas reg from my experience is an awesome reg for the money at the price on Leisure Pro, and at $50 its a steal. I do second the idea of bringing it to your local shop and have them give it a once over. I can't tell you how many "brand new" regulators that people have brought to me over the years that were a bit less than new and needed something.
