I was looking for the basic essentials needed for SCUBA like a BC, Octapus, fins and snorkels and I have seen packages range from $300 to the thousands! I just want something basic like they had for the Resort dive. I am assuming that all BC's have the "Ripcord" air dump over the shoulder, and the regulator that inflates and dumps air with your hand. A guy on the boat told me to get one with an intergrated weight belt, and someone else said it really didn't matter about the weights except when I jumped in, I was afraid the weight belt would slide off me, so I retightened it in the water.

Any advice on getting a package system appreciated.

A couple of things. First, you will get a lot of advice on all kinds of gear to get because we all have what we like and everyone likes something different. Kind of like buying a car.

So, here's some tips. First, buy your mask, fins, snorkel, and boots, that's it. You will need to have those for your class. Other than, everything else you can rent. The best way to make sure the mask seals correctly is to hold your breath, then lightly push the mask onto your face with the strap dangling loose. It should stay there with no problem. Sucking in through your nose as some dealers will tell you presents a false seal as it is creating a vacuum.

Second tip. Rent, rent, and rent some more. Find out what is the most comfortable for you and you can work the best. The best and most gear ever made, may not work for you so comfort and functionality is the most imprtant thing.

As for the weight integrated system, best idea since sliced breat in my oppinion. I have no butt, therefore my weight belt was always sliding down too.

Good luck and enjoy your diving.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I would also tell you to talk to as many other divers as you can and browse through the many forums here.

First of all... Welcome to he board. I am sure you will find lots of very informative forums with very friendly people here.

Now for your question, and before the posting gets moved, totally agree with the two postings. Just get mask, snorkel, fins & booties (you may have to get belt and weights as well depending on your dive centre). Make sure you try different masks that are confortable and give you a good seal.

The rest of the equipment can wait until you try, try, try and decide what will suit your dive style, kind of diving, body, preferences, and budget.

Good luck in your course and let us know how you do.

I would rent fins and booties too. Considering the variety of fins on the market, I would be amazed that you pick out the best fin for your before OW or even during OW.
