This may be a dumb question but....

If you are renting gear from the dive shop, and the boat picks you up at the marina or at your hotel how do you get your gear? Do you pick it up and keep it at the hotel or do they bring it to you on the boat?

If you are renting from the company you are diving with they will bring it to you on the boat.

If the op is based at your hotel you might be able to keep it at your room. That's what I do at Blue Angel so that I can shore dive.

The dive op I use is not located at my hotel, but keeping the equipment to shore dive would be an option . Otherwise, the boat would bring the rental gear.

The standard I believe is that the gear stays on the boat - even if it is your own gear they might take it and rinse it overnight so you don’t have to carry it to the hotel. You just take mask, computer, light and other small stuff with you.

Still, each shop has their own MO, so best to check with your choice of op directly.

Most shops are accommodating if you wanted to keep your rental gear overnight to do a shore dive ask them, at the shop. They would most likely allow it but you would be responsible for it.

It's been my experience that they hold on to the gear and bring it to the boat for you each day. You're using their gear when you dive with them... so they keep the gear on their boat. When you're on the boat, you're there with the gear.

As for getting the gear... every dive op has their own system. Some might have you visit their shop prior to the diving (maybe earlier the morning of...) to try on gear and make sure everything fits. I just came home from Coz yesterday after a week of diving with Dive With Martin. I used their reg and bcd. They simply asked me for my bcd size when I made my reservation, and they had the gear on the boat when I got to the marina.

Whatever system a dive op uses, you can assume it works fine. When you decide which dive op you want to use, just ask them what they do. They'll take care of you.

Just to clarify: most dive ops offer to keep your gear -- usually bcd and reg -- overnight so you don't have to haul it back and forth each day. But they don't require that you leave it with them, of course.

Oh, and not a dumb question at all. One thing I've learned about diving it different parts of the world is that everyone has their own way of dong things. Asking how things are done in a location you haven't yet visited is always a smart question.

Indeed! I wouldn’t put it so lightly if they were taking gear hostage 😅

Thanks for clarifying!
