I wanted to pass along some info about the baggage allowances for Garuda airlines. I am going to Raja Ampat on the Damai II, round trip from Sorong, with Bluewater Dive Travel's charter in November of this year. I'm arriving and staying in Jakarta. With a limited selection of airlines from Jakarta to Sorong, Garuda is the only airline with free baggage for diving equipment that I have found. https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/special-offers/sales-promotion/sportequipment.

And that's 23 kg on top of their 30 kg regular allowance for economy checked bags. Mind you I can't imagine flying with 53 kg of luggage

Somehow now in late 2024 - the link does not work anymore.

If you avail yourself of the scuba equipment addition they will ask you to open the bag to verify-maybe photograph. This is at check in, not security, so unlikely to paw through the bag and if you're compelled to cheat put the scuba gear on top. But don't cheat since that risks screwing up a good thing for the rest of us.

AFAIK Garuda has had that policy at least ever since I started flying with them regularly (2011). Strangely enough they raised their flight prices and stopped the sport equipment allowance around 2015-16 or so (Some marketing genius decided)... Anyway it lasted only for a year or two.
I believe that they had many complaints from their customers (Have to admit I was one of them) and no advantage to boast compared with their competitors such as LionAir & Batik which had much more affordable prices.

Hence they kept the relatively high prices but reinstored the free sport equipment allowance from that time. It's not a promotion but a standard luggage policy from Garuda.
