Garmin has recently launched their Descent S1 buoy which maintains a two-way communication with the T2 tank pods and their Mk3i or X50i (top of the line) dive computers.

One of the most interesting features is the “backtracking” navigation feature where divers can find their way back to the buoy. They state a maximum range of 100m.

But how well does this all work in practice? I.e. when there is current, poor visibility etc.

Great question - I too wonder that - I dive weekly (or more) with a consistent group of divers who are all on the Garmin system - I know we'd all totally volunteer to test the S1 buoy on our dives and report back to Garmin and give a nice writeup for scubaboard.
