it looks like the humbolt dives the most at wolf and darwin. hmmm. are they a pretty good operation? how about the aggressors?

If you look at the whale shark "schedule", you'll note that August is smack dab in the middle. That was my rationale for choosing an August trip and we weren't disappointed. We definitely had more encounters than my previous June trip, but that could have been due to some other factor.

On the other hand, August is also supposedly the coldest month to be diving the Galapagos. The beautiful 60-ish waters in the southern islands that I loved on my first trip were replaced in August by frigid 50-something murk.

So it won't be much of a change for us So Cal divers when we go in early Sept this year! I can't wait to go!

August is a great time to go. Peak whale shark season. Waters will be even colder by Oct/Nov. In Nov 2009, we were getting thermoclines at Wolf. And because you spend so much time not moving at Darwin, it can start to feel chillier than it really is. Humboldt Explorer is operated by Explorer Ventures, so yes...good. As of now, they have no individual spaces available in August, so you would need to find a charter with spaces available. Aggressors have only Aug.26. Deep Blue has nothing after July 26 departure. Unlike last year, space is selling well this year.

I know my LDS had to charter the Humboldt Explorer almost a year and a half ago (2yrs from the time we are going). Our cruise will go Aug. 30th- Sept. 6th. It was such a popular trip that the boat was filled in 1 day.
Charters do fill up the liveaboards at peak times, but don't let that discourage the independent divers. Check directly with the companies operating the liveaboards and they might be able to hook you up with a charter that still needs a few bodies to make their quota.
