Anyone out there do any land based diving from the Galapagos? I tend to get sea sick on boats and can't handle sleeping on them but I really want to dive there. Is there anyone out there with some info for me?

A few years ago, it seemed that I was the only one yapping on-and-on about it, now it seems that the idea has caught on.

When you can visit these lovely islands and also dive for 50% (or less) of a live aboard, it gets pretty inviting.

I have found reliable success with Scuba Iguana, and it seems that this has continued to be the case for others who have gone the land-based route.

Land based is simply not marketed through the dive magazines to North America, but if you look at other magazines worldwide- many of them focus on land based.

Galapagos Issues? Consider "land based" diving instead
RoatanMan - July 20th, 2007

Hi RoatanMan,

Thanks for your help. I emailed Scuba Iguana early last week and no reply. I will try again. I also emailed another company I found on the internet but I asked for land based and they sent me this great boat based trip itinerary. I tried to click on the forum you said to search, maybe I'm an idiot but there was no link and I don't know how or where to find the forum. I haven't spent a lot of time on scuba board and I don't find it that easy to navigate, maybe it's just me?

Apologies for cross-posting... I see this is a common inquiry...

Hi folks! Just thought I'd let you know about another option for land-based diving from San Cristobal Island.
Tranquilo Divers is a small dive operation recently started by a native of the island who has been working in diving and marine conservation internationally, most recently in Bali and Raja Ampat. He has returned to San Cristobal, Galapagos, with the aim to share with others the wonders of the underwater world he calls home. The operation itself is fairly new, but is backed up by an incredible team with a lot of experience, and currently offers complete land-based diving and tour packages as an alternative to the liveaboard model. Tranquilo Divers can also organize day diving trips to other islands, such as Espanola or Floreana, from your base at San Cristobal as well. One of the most amazing dive sites in the Galapagos Islands is Kicker Rock (schools of Galapagos sharks, silkies, eagle rays and of course, hammerhead sharks!), and it is only half an hour from the Port at San Cristobal - check it out with Tranquilo Divers! www.tranquilodivers.com

There are lots of good sites to see from land-based diving from Santa Cruz: Gordon rocks, north seymour, floreana, santa fe, mosquera. Be sure to do your research about companies: there are some little shops in Puerto Ayora that are not properly authorized or follow padi or naui safety procedures. Scuba Iguana does have a good rep, even if they are slow with responses....you could also try the red mangrove dive center or silberstein. Good luck!
