Hi,
Do the Galapagos liveaboards have rental gear available? How about the land-based diving?

It seems like it's a hard core destination where people will bring all their own gear. However I'd be going as part of a longer trip around South America and won't be able to lug my gear around the whole time, so I'd prefer to rent.

thanks

Yes, either should have gear rental, certainly the land based dive-ops more so because of the nature of the clientele and available storage space.

Check with your specific choices to be sure what will be made available for you. If you are a less (or more) than "average" sized human being, wetsuits might be an issue.

As far as land based dive ops, the reputations for quality on many areas seem to fluctuate, with the notable exception of ScubaIguana, which has rated well with each report posted.

As far as liveaboard boat, remember agin that they have limited storage capacity for dragging around stuff that most such customers insist on bringing along, anyway. A careful correspondence with the outfitter will give you the details you need.

You might want to note that the Galapagos Sky is now associated with Scubapro and has the top of the line scubapro gear availabke for rental at quite modest rates. Full set of gear for 7 nights including wetsuit, at $200 for 7 nights. Dive computer is extra at $75 for 7 nights, so maybe worth carrying your own with you. Most of the other liveaboards also offer gear but the feedback I get is that quality is a variable.

Contact your boat or dive operator in advance so that they will have everything you need set aside for you. Three people lost their luggage on my boat. They were all able to dive - between what the boat had and what we fellow divers were able to share. But one guy had a fin strap break - not fun in swift currents with schooling hammerheads!

You will be diving in unfamiliar water, challenging conditions. Make sure you carry at least what will make you feel comfortable. I'd carry my regulator and mask. My luggage was lost in Indonesia last year. I always carry my reg/computer but I had to rent everything else. I was not happy with the mask. I didn't let it ruin my vacation (what could I do?!?) but it wasn't ideal.
