I'm thinking about buying the Canon G9 and getting the Ikelite housing for it. I won't be able to get a strobe for a while and was wondering if the internal camera flash would work with it. I've heard that the lens port blocks the flash and only the upper corner gets lit but it says on the Ikelite website that it works fine.
Thanks,
ER

The port does block the flash. To counter this, you gotta use the diffuser that comes with your housing. Be careful not to lose it though, string it and secure it to your housing. The flash is practically rendered useless without the diffuser.

Ok Thanks, I'm glad to hear that. Do you know if the diffuser still works with macro shots?

I just tested mine without the strobe. I got a shadow from the lens port with and without the Ikelite supplied diffuser. The diffuser helped a little, but there was still a noticeable shadow.

You could always spend almost the same amount of money and purchase the canon housing and a strobe now then later upgrade to the ikelite housing if desired. That is what I plan to do. I already had the inon z240 and was wanting to upgrade cameras but was not ready to spend the cash to purchase the g9 and ike housing at one time. So I purchased the g9 and the canon housing. I figure even if I decide to upgrade to the ike housing later. For the cost of the canon housing, it will still be cool to have and take on dives when I don't want to lug around the large strobe setup.

You're right on the money. I have the g7 and z240 strobe and I think their a great match. I don't see spending more for the ikelite housing other than the wheel function being enabled. The diffuser for the g7-g9 is pretty much useless for macro shots - at least the extreme capabilities of the cameras.

ER. You would be surprised what some people can do with just the internal flash and canon housing. Macro it is possible to produce some very nice images when there is little possibility for backscatter. Wide angle is a bit of a different story if you want to light up foreground objects. If you are shallow or just shooting silhouttes then a filter camera with no strobe can be spot on. Have a look at what this guy does with just a g9 in a canon housing and an inon macro lens.
