Hi Everyone:

Just got back from a fabulous trip to Beqa Lagoon in Fiji. I used the G9 with Ikelite housing and dual Ikelite 125 strobes and Ike wide angle lens for most of the trip. Because the camera does not work in TTL in manual mode, I shot aperture priority, using exposure compensation (usually underexposing by one stop) to try to get a shutter speed of 1/125 (the camera defaults to 1/60). However, nearly all the pictures ended up being shot at 1/60. I was very pleased with the results, and was able to achieve some control over the exposure by changing the aperture, but did not have the same ability as when I shot in full manual as I did on a previous vacation to Bonaire (when my TTL was not functioning properly).

We also posted a Youtube video of the shark dive @ YouTube - Fiji Tiger Shark, shot with video footage from an Olympus SP 560 point and shoot.

The main benefit that I found from shooting TTL was getting well exposed shots quickly without having to make a lot of adjustments. The benefit of shooting manual meant that I could control the shutter speed and get nice, dark backgrounds when I wanted to (perfect for Bonaire, when you are shore diving and don't have to keep up with the group).

Overall, I'm happy with my G9, but I think that at some point, it will become my backup camera, when I step up to SLR. The shutter lag, lack of enough aperture settings, and lack ability to shoot TTL in manual mode are the main reasons I would make the switch. However, I was able to afford a great dive trip by not buying that SLR and housing yet:-)

I welcome any feedback on the pictures, including if I got any of the fish names wrong.

Nice Job!

Exposures overall look good. So are a lot of these cropped big, or did you just decide to size them small? I pulled up a few originals, and they were tiny?

Fuji must have been awesome. On my list of places, but likely not until my son is OUT of college... sigh.. he is 14.

Thanks Ron. I sized them small for the internet--the camera captures 34 meg files:-) A few were cropped, especially the nudibranchs, but normally I try to get as close as possible.

I'm a college instructor and I think it's great that you want your son to go to college, but there are many scholarships and student loans available:-)
