hey peoples,

i have an A75 that ive been using underwater with the canon housing, and no strobe, but i was thinking of upgrading. ive been looking at getting a canon g6, with some sort of housing, and eventually a strobe. does anyone have any experience with these underwater? what housing and strobe do you use? any better setups come to mind? thanks.

Hi, I have just got an ikelite housing for my g6. Unfortunately I have been having issues with my sinuses so haven't managed to get it underwater yet. I choose the camera for the aperture range - getting close to the 5050. Also wanted a more rugged housing which was more easily self maintained. I flooded a canon housing recently and already love the build of the ike. I took it for a test without camera because I was a little raw on my last loss so I just wanted a double check, in case something got knocked loose on the flight.

The shutter is very cool on the ike. Much easier to give a half press than with the smaller canon housings. It is however much bigger than the smaller manufacturer housings so it depends on what you want to do. I love the fact that I can sync to flash so not waste and worry about battery. The G6 has awesome battery life though so this shouldn't be an issue.

Shutter lag is not to bad but focus lock is a bit of an issue. The LCD freezes slightly as lock is achieved which I don't like, and don't know what this will be like underwater yet, but I'm sure it will be easier enough to work around. Must say though that at least the focus is usually spot on.

If money is an issue there may be better options. It really depends what you want. I wanted the aperture range as it allows me much more creativity with DOF. The g6 also has better ISO sensitivity than most in the same range - ie more light. But if speed is of great importance look maybe to the Sony V3 (this was my other option) - also slightly more expensive and I already knew the canon menu well. For a cheaper option maybe the new Oly 7070. However heard bad things about manufacturer housing.

Ikelite is going to issue a true TTL housing for the G6 shortly. I bought the G6 explicitly for all the features and the fact that the true TTL housing will be available. Check Ikelite's web page for details. Can't wait to go digital from my SS MMEXII!
