I'm having issues with my G12. Everything I shoot in video seems blown out. It's set on 200ASA, standard video, auto, wb done off the sand. In the shallows, everything seems ok, not great, but a start, then a little deeper, maybe 10ft, it goes to crud. I've attached pairs of stills, each pair from the same video clip, just different times during each of the two shots.
My HV30 and my A570 have never done this, and I'm wondering if the camera has a problem.

Any thoughts or advice would be welcome

I have the G12 and am a beginner...so take this into account! :)

Am wondering how often you white balance?? I tend to do so anytime there is a change in degree of light...this seems to make a huge difference. Also, I use a white slate rather than the sand.

One thing that I've also learned is that the quality greatly diminishes if I zoom to any degree.

Here is a sample of what I'm thus far getting with the G12

I've had some very good luck in coming up with some reasonably good videos...the exception would be that I am still learning a whole lot about reducing camera "shake" (through how I hold it), composition, etc.

I've been very pleased with the quality of video thus far...but as I said, I'm a beginner and still in the very beginning level learning stages.

Hmmm, nice work! I recognize Devil's Throat. :D Been through there a number of times...love Coz!
Anyway, that's the sort of video I should be getting, though just now I'm shooting cold fresh water.

I may have discovered the cause of my problems. I was checking the camera over and found the "vivid colour" turned on! Whether of not it has been on all this time is uncertain, but it would certainly cause the kinds of problems I've been having. Now I have to rush out and do some more diving:) Oh well!

I shoot video underwater with a G12 and have never experienced the overexposure issues you are having. My G12 is set to auto exposure and auto white balance when I shoot video underwater. I have found the G12 to give me great video results underwater with just the auto settings. Have you tried setting your ASA to auto instead of at 200?

Here is a short clip from my G12 using complete auto settings: [vimeo]25629311[/vimeo]

Hope this helps identify your problem.

That's the next thing to try..Also gonna make sure my colours aren't set to vivid

Very nice! Also, if you do a manual WB, leaving everything else auto. (It's what I thought I had done other than the 200 ASA), I think you'll be even more pleased with the result.
Those are the sorts of videos I expect from my G12.

I used to manually white balance the camera. When the conditions changed, I would do another white balance. However, inevitably, the conditions would change, I would find something great to video, forget to white balance the camera, and the footage would be no good as it is near impossible to correct the white balance after taking the video. Therefore, I started leaving the camera set to auto white balance as this setting allows the camera to continually update the white balance. I have found this setting to work well in all types of underwater settings. However, I do agree that a manual white balance is probably best.

I found that in Caribbean water at least, a manual WB at 60 or 70 ft was good for any depth to 100 or so
Here's a short clip from a video using my HV30...I want my G12 to do as well
