Hey shawrg,
If you can, try to get about 6inches away and see if the corner is dark in the shots. 1.6ft is the maximum distance for shooting in macro with the G10, but I'll probably be shooting either 1 foot shots or 6inch shots for most of my pictures with flash.

I failed at uploading the images but I couldn't tell much difference with the diffuser from 4 inches vs 9 inches with or without zoom. The big difference is with vs without diffuser.

While I was staging the previous test shots, I noticed that I have developed what I would call an artifact. It has the appearance of an arc extending outward from the cap of this doll and seems to overlap the lens barrel shadow however, I have never noticed it in any previous photos. Any suggestions? I will put this question as a separate thread.

The artifact is the internal flash reflecting from the inside of the port. You will need to cover the flash with exposed slide film or build a light barrier. You will have to have an external strobe, deal with it, lol.

Yep... that's for sure. That means using natural light and movie filming for a month or two...not that big of a deal. ;)

The G10's internal strobe cannot be used with the Ikelite housing as so stated on the Ikelite website. The lens port blocks it. You must use an external strobe. The Ike AF35 strobe is not compatible with the Ike G10 housing as they so stated in an e mail to me.

The Canon G10 housing does not have a dial on the back to work the F stop and shutter speed controls if you are a photographer that uses manual settings which I do. You must use two hands at the same time to accomplish that with the menu buttons. The Ikelite housing has the dial. That alone would be the deal maker for me even though the Ike housing is more expensive.

The Ike G10 housing has a connection for a hard wired strobe to connect to the hot shoe on the camera (true TTL) The Canon housing does not so you must use the internal strobe to fire any slave strobe.

Ikelite now has a dome port for the G10 housing making the wide angle even wider.

The "wide angle" Ikelite means is barely 65 degrees. For underwater use where visibility is the restriction compared to air, a 65 degree FOV is not really wide angle and much less than most of the wet mount lenses provide which is 90 to 165 degree depending upon lens. That is simply an optical fact.

Thanks Nemrod,

I agree. The permanent solution is to get an external strobe. I have successfully resisted that for years. But, I'm close to giving in to the obvious!

Resistance is futile.
