The problem is there are too many people on the planet using too many resources (too many of the wrong resources). Too many military actions using millions of tons of explosives. The threat of nuclear conflict contantly hanging over our heads. All the test launches which burns enough fuel to power an average city for a year. They don’t care how much fuel they burn or all the nasty gases they spew into the atmosphere. All the leaders can think about is power, control, and their ego’s. they never think about conservation and saving the planet as a platform.
There are some concerned groups pushing to change the way we go about our day and the materials we use, but they are routinely labelled as liberal alarmists and happy life disrupters. Most people in developed countries are too selfish to look at the big picture and change.
Their priorities are all screwed up.
The rest of the world is either spoiled or just trying to survive.
If dynamiting a reef for a few measly fish means your family eats for another day, then they do it.
The other side of it is how pissed off the teen age girl gets because daddy won’t let her take the Bentley out on a Friday night.
Do you really need to buy and drive that 42’ offshore race boat and burn 400 gallons of fuel in one day doing a poker run because your ego is so huge and just “because you can”?
Next time you hop in the 9 MPG 454 Suburban to go get a quart of milk think about what it’s really costing you.
Plastic is one of the most over used and abused materials. We’re literally going to drown in a plastic hell in the next 50 years if we don’t severely cut back and change the way we live. Think about how much plastic you use every day and how much get’s thrown out, from all the food wrappers to just about every packaged item. Why does an ink cartridge need to be packaged in a plastic container 50 times it’s size? Answer: So it’s harder for people to stuff under their jacket and shop lift, that’s the only reason.
What about cheap hair dryers and other throw away appliance items. Remember when stuff was made well and you could buy parts for it? Not no more! It breaks and you throw it away, go buy a new one. The problem is you go through about 10 of the new crappy ones to one good one that we used to have.
It is really sad. At this point in my life I’m not able to get to Cozumel or any other tropical dive locations. But there will be a day when I can, and I’m afraid that by the time I get there it will be decimated and there will be nothing to see. I went to the GBR back in 2000, and now people tell me that what I saw then is pretty much gone now.
