Reason for Dive: Our company dive club decided to go golf ball collecting in a few water hazards at a nice golf course last weekend. We thought we'd give it a try since we've never done it before. I was a bit concerned about vis and the quality of diving which as it turns out is horrible. But the practice of diving in 0 Visibility was good, and this story was well worth our trip.

Background: I was with my Dad and 2 brothers, so there were 4 divers usually with 1 on the surface collecting balls from the 3 divers in the water. As it turned out in this case just my Dad and myself were in the water. We were diving in a water hazard that was made of concrete shaped in a steep V. So all the balls that feel victim to this trap would fall down the sloped V shape until they reached the bottom at about 6 to 7 feet, where it would meet a muddy grave. The shape of this trap made for easy collecting since you just descended the concrete wall and felt around for the mud, this is where all the balls would be.

The Story: I started on one end of the pond, and my Dad on the other. Both of us were in complete darkness, filling up our bags, heading straight for each other along the same line of mud/concrete seam. My 2 brothers were on the surface watching our bubbles get closer..... closer.... and then they started the count down to when they thought we would meet 3..... 2.... 1..... then they saw a lot more bubbles, which made them laugh to the thought of what happened 6 feet below. Now from my perspective..... I was moving quickly along the murky bottom grabbing into the mud collecting balls, when I felt a soft object that when touched moved extremely quickly followed by a scream that sounded as if it came from a 7 yr old school girl. Ya know, it's amazing what you can hear underwater. The sound of a 50 year old Dad screaming from complete terror in the darkness of a murky water hazard.....never thought he sounded like a little girl... maybe it was the distortion of the water that made him sound like that, but I doubt it, he was officially freaked out! Now right after this humorous underwater scream, I knew the moment who it was and that I had touched his hand, so it was all I could do to keep the Reg in my mouth from laughter. After a few seconds I regained my composure, and resumed collecting the last few golf balls, then I surfaced. Upon reaching the surface, I found my 2 brothers doubled over from laughter as my Dad had already recounted the story to them, when he saw me come up, he was shaking his finger at me with a startled smile and said "you got me good!" He later admitted that was the most frightened he has ever been. We will never let him forget it! :)

Funny you should mention Loch Ness monster. One of the Ponds we were in had an island green, and I scared a guy half to death after I cleared my Reg of water. I'm sure he doesn't know to this day what he saw! I could've been nice and waved but I wanted him to keep wondering!

I guess you had him pooping golf balls after that scare.

But Champ resides in Lake Champlain...:D

What course was that?

One day, while waiting for a foursome to clear, I used my telescoping golf ball retriever to see what I could find. I found several balls. One was utterly grungy and had a big leach on it. As I was trying to decide what to do with it, some idiot from behind tried to lay up and almost hit us. We were in a position that enabled me to sway his ball for the one with the leach without his noticing... so I did. Then we went to the next hole. Let him figure whether to take what will be an easy birdie and deal with the grunge and leach or settle for a lost ball and a drop.

Ok I admit it I screamed like a girl..............hey I couldn't see a thing!!!

You got me Scuba Jerm.
