m and m:
I use cressi pro star, Find them great, they have enough grunt to tow and perform a rescue if needed yet are light enough to double as comfy snorkle fins.

ps, pro star have lasted me 150 dives and still going very strong

i use a pro star too and i to m and m's post. great fin. eyebrow

Footslogger:
I've narrowed my search to a couple fin types and wanted to get some feedback from any divers who use or have used them. The 2 fins in mind are the Tusa Full Foot Split Fins and the Cressi-Sub Pro Star Full Foot Fins. I've been intrigued with the split fin design but I'm not willing to pay the price for the open heeled styles. Also I was wondering if the split fin style is really needed with a lighter weight full foot fin.

We have the TUSAs and love them. Great value-for-money proposition.

>Anybody up for inventing a full foot fin that has an ankle strap?<

No need for invention, the concept was translated into practice in the 1950s and 1960s. Three exemplar designs:

1. Sandal design. The fin had a heelpiece extended backwards from the foot pocket so that the heel was protected. An adjustable heel strap kept the fin on the foot. You'll find examples from the 1950s here: http://www.hdsitalia.com/articoli/21_attrezzature.pdf

2. Instep strap design. A full foot fin is equipped with buckles on each side. The strap goes over the top of the foot at the instep. This design was used on Healthways Rondine and Turnbull Giant fins. Britmarine's sandal-type Penguin fins in the 1960s had two straps, one over the instep, and one behind the heel.

3. Heel strap design. A full foot fin is equipped with a heel strap so providing a tighter fit than that can be afforded by the heel pocket alone.

So ingenuity isn't a monopoly of the modern era. The early pioneers of diving had imaginative ideas of their own and implemented them.

There's one more solution to the fit problem that hasn't be mentioned yet. Fin retainers are three-way straps specially developed for wearers of full foot fins. They are a French invention - "fixe-palmes" - from the 1960s, worn over the heel and instep, and have proved popular with players of underwater hockey: http://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/fingripper.jpg

Hey Folks... been surfing around for long time but never posted... lately tho been researching lot of equipment and locations... so starting to have some questions...

This thread caught my eye because I'm looking to get a pair of full foot fins...

Been using open heeled quatros for the past few years, and like them well enough, but doing more and more tropical diving lately and wanting something lighter and less to carry (ie no booties)... if I had my choice I'd just grab a full foot set of the same fins and be done with it...

My problem is tho a large foot... wear a size 14 US... Mares doesn't make anything close to that size in a full foot... and from all my digging around not many at all do.

Seems my only choices might be the atomic aquatics split fin (sz 12-14) or the twin jet from scuba pro (sz 13-14)... both are split fins which get mixed reviews, but would appreciate any additional comparative thoughts...

And anyone know of other options?

Thanks...

just got back from a liveaboard where i used the atomic full foot splits. didn't have any problems at all. they were comfortable, easy to frog kick with, easy to manuever, and had lots of sustainable speed when called on. they were $89 compared to the $39 someone else said they paid for a different brand, but i would still recommend them to anybody interested in full foot fins.

i have rondine A and Prostar of cressi

i enjoy using the Prostar (full foot) but for power the rondine does it.

but so far the prostar is perfect for the dolphin kick swimming just like the into the blue movie when they swim dolphin style.

Haddock,
Have you physically tried on any of the Mares fins? They tend to run a full size larger than what is printed on the footpocket. I'm pretty sure our largest size will fit your size 14 dogs.
