I have tried several different types also. I actually bought the Ocean Reef. Then a few yrs later bought another Ocean Reef and sold the original to a buddy of mine. I really like my Neptune NIRA model. Have tried the Space and DO like the newer reg better than the NIRA but not enough diff. really to matter to me. After using the masks for a while you get very used to the little things. I don't even notice the airflow when looking up or down. If you are breathing when going heads down there shouldnt be a problem with freeflow. Might seep a little but it isnt too bad. Yes, all FFM's use more air but not a HUGE diff. to me. After 45 mins to an hour underwater I need a break anyway so I just go change tanks. To me the FFM's are much mroe comfortable than a standard reg/mask combo. I also love the comm units. yes they are scratchy and noisy but when I am diving with my kids or when lobstering with a group of friends they are nice to have.

... I think that the Ocean Reef mask has some issues. What I found was when you look up, it feels as though you are sucking the gas through a straw - but when you look down it wants to free flow so I found myself constantly trying to adjust the regulator rather than enjoy my dive! I also found that the visor fogged up on me. I can see now why this would not be the mask of choice for Military/Commercial/Public Safety Divers!! To be honest, I can't see why a recreational diver would choose this mask over an AGA....
I agree. It depends on what you want to use the mask for. I have a pair of AGAs, a pair of EXOs, two KMBs and an Aquadyne, each type has pluses and minuses. Any of those will protect you from drowning in case of a seizure, but at the price of increased gas consumption. If you're looking for cold protection, a bunch of Norwegian divers showed up on a research cruise some years ago with this mask. They had installed a scuba mouthpiece inside the mouth pocket (it has separate eye/nose and mouth pockets and they swore by them. I tried one, it was comfortable, warm and easy to clear. About a hundred bucks!

Doesn't look like you could put comms in there....

No comms, although there was a USD mask years ago that was like a Pacifica with a mouth cup that could accept either a single or double hose regulator. We used one of the double hose regulator ports on the mask for our comms (this was the Faracom and one made by a Canadian company SUBCOM?)

Here's a description of the old US Navy tests on the mask above (called Parkway Cressi Sub FFM) and the US Divers (Called Birns Oceanographics U.S. Divers Aqualung FFM)

What makes you think you won't drown with a FF?

I think he may have been thinking you would not lose the reg which is true. I would guess you would be somewhat less likely to drown, but drowning is always a distinct possibility when one is having seizures while submerged with most any equipment.

Only thing that comes close to the AGA (besides commercial hats) is the Apeks. Does anyone dive one? Does the gas flow over the lense? Can you switch out second stages at depth if you opt for no mouth peice? :blinking:

Did you forget about the Poseiden Atmosphere?

Isn't that just an AGA with a different regulator and faceplate?

Does the wreck come standard or is that optional?
