I made it out to Ft. Pickens today (9-6-09) with a dive class doing their open water check out dives and figured that this would be a good opportunity to start working on creating a dive map of the site. I arrived on site in the morning to overcast skies and tannic water conditions due to the recent rains and made worse by the neap tide that was occurring this weekend. Visibility was 8-10 and dark, luckily I took along my dive rite primary light and it made things very nice. I took along my large dive slate and wrote down the names of the different objects that I know about at the site. When I made it to them I sat my dive computer on top of them and took depth readings of each object and wrote it down. I also took depth readings of the bottom section of the main rock pile from the western edge to the Eastern edge to see how it contours and see if there is any depth change (which there is). I also did the same thing along the top portion of the main rock pile as well. Since the conditions werent great the instructor didnt take everyone too far away from the rocks so I didnt get depth readings of all of the objects I wanted to, but I still got quite a bit. The next step is to get out and finish the depth readings of the objects and the western rock pile. I will then take some cloth measuring tape and get distances. From there I will get compass readings and then put the map together. I want to make this available (free) to dive shops in the area so that new divers to this site can use it to make safe dives. I would of course make it easily available for ScubaBoarders as well. Anyone who is interested in helping me put it together will be given credit on the map. If a dive club helped out
(hint, hint MrXray)
then I would of course have their club logo on the map as an advertisement to the divers using the map.
PM me with any interest on helping.
