Hi,

I am planning a trip to Fort Myers in March and need some information.

Any recommendations for shore dives, charter operators, dive shops...

There will probably be only 1 or 2 of us diving and maybe some snorklers.

Any <60' wrecks to see?

I would be willing to drive an hour or two tops, but would prefer something in the area.

Thanks for any input.

We have excellent diving in the area, but most of it is well offshore. The Gulf is vastly different from the Atlantic. The bottom slopes off gradually. Typically, we reach 60 feet about 20 miles offshore. You won't find beautiful reefs in the area, but there are lots of artificial reefs and the fish are plentiful. Jewfish are common. They usually excite most divers. Visibility can exceed 100 feet, but is usually much less and the best visibility is usually farther offshore. Snorkeling is not recommended.

There is a limestone reef, accessible from the beach, just south of Ft. Myers.

As Walter said the Gulf in this area is vastly different than what you might find in the Atlantic or in the Keys. However there are some wonderful natural and artificial reefs (30-60 few) that are easy to access by boat. The natural structure here is more ledges and drowned sinks rather than the towering coral heads that you would see in the Keys. If you have an advanced certification and are willing to take a little bit of a longer boat ride there are any number or outstanding wrecks in 85-120fsw where there is a wide verity of marine life. Here’s a link to one of the guys I dive with that is a NAUI and TDI instructor as well as a Master Captain.

If not Key Largo, Boca Raton and West Palm are also only a few hours away. Good Luck
