Its called "Mass Marketing". Halcyon has probably done their computations and realize they have to sell X number of gear for them to become $X company by X years. And marketing to a niche group of divers only will not bring it there. I think its strategy of "for the elite" when it started out, helped it build a strong brand equity and it is good business sense for them to carry that equity to mainstream market. After all, the main reason why they are into gear manufacturing is profit.

If Im not mistaken I have seen a Halcyon ad in the undersea journal (a PADI publication) :D

I really think BP and Wing will become mainstream equipment in the very near future, not just because of hype but because it's a product that really delivers. I dunno if you have seen the prices of IST and aquamundo BC's but they have models that are 50% cheaper than the branded ones, imagine if these guys start manufacturing BP and wings also...

Unfortuntely for Halcyon, they painted themselves into a corner with their DIR configuration sales pitch. The existing backplate, wings, and continuous harness desingn can neither be patented nor copyrighted. The number of suppliers of DIR style gear has multiplied tenfold over the past couple of years; and I guess Halcyon is trying their very best to show why they are different from all the rest. That's why Halcyon is trying to differentiate itself by introducing , besides the stealth line, items like its "evolve wings" and disastrous SS inflator.

I don't think other major manufacturers would like to step into the DIR bandwagon because of a product line that is hard to patent or copyright . In addition, some people might not like the idea of a crotch strap and the feeling of the tank valve behind their head while they are diving. So declaring the death of jacket style BC's might be premature....

if any manufacturer would like a group to promote their BP they have to use PPDs for their endorsers and ina matter of 1 yr. alot would be sold !!!!

segmenting or targeting a DIR market is very limited. but if you position it as a recreational BCD, PPD would be the best group hehhehehehe

imagine the BP will be used by PPDs almost everyweekend!!!

let them promotional BP flow to PPDs

.

I feel the metal inflator and evolve were both legitimate inventions, and not just product differentiation gimmicks; the metal inflator was supposed to be easy to self service which is very tech (they just didn't work very well), and there was a ton of demand for a doubles donut wing hence the evolve.

My only problem with Halcyon is that there are other people making similar or better products for less. Also others offer products that are more flexible yet still just as DIR. For example, Halcyon wings and plates only have one pair of holes for attachment, whereas a lot of the other wings and plates have multiple pairs of holes so you can adjust where to put the wing relative to the plate. Also some other companies offer different size and shape plates. My plate also has the slots for independent doubles that are really useful when manifolded doubles aren't available.

It's too bad though. I was told that WKPP approached companies like dive-rite and others and asked them to manufacture the types of plates, wings and other equipment they wanted, yet they wouldn't because it was just a bunch of cavers asking for the stuff. Hence some of the guys set up Halcyon secifically to produce the equipment they felt they needed and now everyone has copied them and even improved upon their designs. If Halcyon were to close down then maybe these other companies would start to ignore what WKPP and similarly minded divers want once again.

The "H" in the harness may finally just stand out for "Hangin". I think its just an overrated piece of equipment.
