From Khufu to Justinian: Shipping in the Ancient World

Ships often exhibit the height of a society’s technology. In this survey, ranging from the solar boats of the Egyptian pharaohs through Bronze Age trading vessels, Iron Age ships of war and trade to the Byzantine Empire, you will study the changes in ship technology and how this reflects changes in society. As diverse as the societies of this long period are, the ships produced from the Old Kingdom of Egypt to the period of Justinian of Byzantium utilized the same approach to ship construction, starting with the outer shell and then creating the internal framing, but with an amazing variety of results. Instructor Margaret Morden is an archaeologist who has worked throughout the Mediterranean, both on land and underwater.
