What are the best ways of dealing with a free flowing reg?
Turn it upside down in the water. If it doesn't stop or continues to be a chronic problem, have your LDS adjust it(just a simple turn of a screw).

For some reason my octo almost always free flows on the first dive of the first day. I just push my finger into the mouthpiece and it stops.

My reg free flows sometimes...

like the others have said, put your thumb in it, then turn it upside down and put it into the water. It should stop....

Do this quickly so you don't lose a lot of your air.

Fastmarc:
If it free flows while in a dive and refuses to stop, would bending the hose sharply stop it, allowing you to use your octo?
It's an easy adjustment, don't take chances. Fix it before you go

There is the good chance that it is a first stage problem so bending the hose would transferr the problem from showing in your primary second stage to showing in your octo.

In other words you would be no better off.

I dove with a guy who said he did just that to stop a FF caused by freezing of his second stage. He was a pretty big boy. It can be rough on hoses.

It would solve a second stage free flow from freezing and in a couple mins of not being used underwater I'll bet the ice melted....

Even though I am strictly a WWW (warm water wimp), I understand. But if the problem is a first stage freeze up, it will set the alternate to FF. His apparently was the primary 2nd stage on his Mk25/S600/G250.
