A young scuba-diving instructor lost his life in Cyprus after he went missing in Cape Greco on Saturday before dawn, with reports saying he had gone free diving but never resurfaced.
Police said 21-year-old British national Rhys Lee Williams died Saturday morning in Cape Greco, Famagusta district, where he went free diving with a friend after midnight.
Local media said Williams, described as a permanent resident living in Paralimni, went to Cape Greco around 1:45am with a friend, who said Williams never resurfaced after going in the water for a free dive.
After the male friend notified authorities, a foot patrol and members of the coast guard rushed to the scene, along with divers enlisted in a search and rescue mission.
Williams was found submerged in the water after 4am with local media saying his foot appeared to have been trapped under a rock.
After divers managed to pull him out of the water, Williams was taken to Famagusta General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
A post mortem is expected to point to the exact cause of death.
