I just got a Canon 50D and I'm trying it out with the kit lens. What do you think? I was kind of far away and the zoom kit lens isn't that great, I think the focus is soft.... help

So what depth were you at? Could be the viz...Ok, not funny. If you want to know what the lens can really do, park the camera on a tripod and shoot a spread out newspaper page after carefully focusing in manual. Check corner sharpness & center at various focal lengths. I suspect you won't be too upset at that point w/ performance but do what you can to be steady as possible whenever squeezing a shot off (above or under water). It would help to know what shutter speed/ focal length etc. you were at for this shot. Also how much cropping was done. Don't sweat it yet. // ww

Thanks WWW, I will try the newspaper deal. F5 1/1600 focal length 135mm. It was nearing dusk so I was losing light, but the fox were wrestling around.
I don't have a housing for this camera, yet. I will be using my Oly PS in an U/W housing for this trip. Maybe by next trip I will have this camera down and be brave enough to risk putting it in a housing (although the housing isn't cheap).

It's a nice picture, lens seems to have functioned just fine. If you would like to learn about MTF testing (used for lenses) and see results, checkout photodo.com .

I checked out Photodo... lots and lots of info, thanks.

Choc-Yeah, the newspaper bit isn't exactly the Nthdegree of tech but simple to do. If you were getting that sort of exposure nearing dusk I'd have to guess your ISO was up there quite a bit--that'll make any lens look soft. Check things out at ISO 100 or so. Also if the foxes were messing around I bet there was some camera movement from just trying to keep them in the frame, that'll throw off even a high shutter speed. Some bright light shots of stationary subjects, holding the camera rock steady at a slower ISO should convince you things are ok--the newspaper biz wouldn't exactly be necessary. // ww
