John (sontek), Miles (atlasbear) and I have been having a string of couchsurfers come into town to hang out with us lately. This past Friday we had a few couchsurfers from New Orleans come hang out at the beach and to do some partying. They happened to come about two days after the thick tarballs hit Pensacola Beach - so while there was oil in various spots and anytime you came out the water. A lot of it was cleaned up and we still enjoyed the beach
For the last couple of dives, John, Miles and I have been going to Fort Pickens and definitely seeing a vary milky brown color. Today completely changed with outgoing tide. We decided the best way to end the couchsurfer's experience to Pensacola was - of course - to provide them with a scuba experience.
We pretty much drove everywhere to find a pool to do it in, but we ended up at Fort Pickens. We all had an amazing time and the couchsurfers (Tory and Krista) got the whole introduction to scuba diving and even went down to 20ft.
We ran a navigation line from the beach to the tire and started them off with basic equipment skills. We taught them about being safe, breathing properly and following the line. They were a bit timid at first, but thanks to our amazing skills we have two new diver converts!
We saw a huge stingray and tons of tropical fish. With the spill, everything is moving in to the bay and when you go at low tide (which we ended up doing) you don't get that murky brown water.
In the end, it was an awesome weekend!
