if you do find something underwater are there any legal forms you have to file to keep the items?

That depends. Where did you find something? There are several laws pertaining to salvage rights, etc. However. If you found something like a modern wedding ring, or necklace, you could do the right thing, and turn it in, and if nobody claimed it; it would be yours. But again. It depends on where you find things.
 
i haven't found anything, the thought popped into my head because i remembered some divers found a boat full of 150 yo red woods on a ship that sunk in the great lakes when i was a kid. they claimed them and made desks, furniture, etc.
