Ok Guys my wife and I both watch what we eat almost like it is a religion, but we are going to cozumel for a week soon, and if we are going to throw caution to the wind could I get alittle help from you all. Where are the best places to eat.:06:

Christi lives on the island & these are her recommendations...

Christi's Restaurant list - updated...but not exhaustive

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Christi’s Restaurant List (in no particular order)

* right around $5 or less ** $5 to $15 * ** $10 to $15 **** $10 to $30+

**La Choza – Corner of Av. 10 and Adolpho Rosada Salas Open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Yucatecan style Mexican food – Shrimp Chile Rellenos, and fajitas are among my favorites.

**Sonora Grill – Corner of Av. 15 and Benito Juarez. Open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.
Mexican Seafood and traditional fare. Sonora shrimp and garlic shrimp are my favorites.

**El Moro – back in the hood…just tell the taxi driver the name of the restaurant Open for lunch and dinner, closed on Thursdays. Traditional and local Mexican food with a great seafood selection. Consommé de Moro, shrimp on a wire, and Mole Enchiladas are my favorites. Try the fried bananas as a desert or appetizer.

*El Pique – Av. 30 between Benito Juarez and Calle 2 (across from San Francisco) Open 7 days a week for dinner only. My favorite taco stand. Tacos el Pastor or beef tacos with cheese, serape style

*Las Palmas (cocina economica) – corner of Av. 25 and Calle 3 Cheap eats for lunch only Monday through Saturday. My favorite is the Chicken Relleno.

*Chilangos – Av. 10 between Calle 11 and Calle 15 Open for lunch only Monday through Friday. Another cheap local eats place. Daily specials vary.

*Los Seras – Corner of Av. 30 and Calle 3 Open 7 days a week for dinner only. Another great taco place. Tacos al pastor are the best here.

*Camilo’s – Av 5 between Calle 2 and Calle 4 Open 7 days a week from 10:00am to 7:00pm
One of my very favorites! Seafood tacos and tortas. My favorites are the shrimp tacos or shrimp torta.

**** Guido’s – Main waterfront between Calle 6 and Calle 8 Open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. Another favorite. Not to be missed. Excellent calzones, pizza, and I typically order the daily seafood special. .

**** French Quarter – Will reopen approximately January 15, 2006. Av. 5 between Adolpho Rosada Salas and Calle 3 Open 7 days a week for dinner only Great atmosphere. Steaks, seafood, Cajun style dishes. Orleans chicken and the pork tenderloin are my favorites here. .

***** Mesa 17 - www.mesa17.com Closed.

*****La Cocay – A true culinary delight in a warm elegant setting. Calle 8 between Av. 10 & Av. 15
Here is my official review  http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread...16#post1192416 Napa Salad, Pork Tenderloin, Pepper Crusted Sashimi Tuna, and Filet Mignon, Calamari rings sautéed in basil and garlic, Duck spring rolls with tropical corn, tomato, and mango salsa, Garlic Shrimp Tapas, Tequila Sautéed Shrimp with Roasted Nopal and chile de arbol, Plantain Crusted Fish with Honey Glaze and Cilantro Rice and lightly steamed veggies. Hungry yet???

***Especias – Will reopen approximately January 15, 2006 in a new location. Calle 3 between Av. 5 & Av. 10. Open Monday through Saturday for dinner only. Adrian is one of the best hosts on the island. This is a fusion of Mexican/Argentenian and exotic flavors. My favorites are the cilantro fish or chicken, or Shrimp Zambal.

**Casa Denis – in the main square. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. One of the oldest restaurants in Cozumel. Shrimp fajitas or Enchiladas suizas.

*Coco’s – Av. 5 between 1st and Rosada Salas…just inside the south end of the square. Open for breakfast Tuesday through Sunday from 6:00 to 12:00. Closed September and October. Terri makes the best coffee on the island! My favorites are the taquitos, the Super Tacos, and the eggs Mexicana…really everything is GREAT!

**Rock-n-Java – Located on the waterfront just south of Punta Langosta mall (Carlos & Charlies). Open Monday through Sunday 7:00am until 10:00pm, close at 2:00 on Saturdays. GREAT spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Everything from eggs and bacon to gourmet pastas and vegetarian specialties. In my opinion, Lisa makes the very best Veggie burgers on the planet, even for the non-vegetarian!! Try the homemade breads and deserts too!

**La Mission ON 30th!! – NOT to be mistaken with La Mission downtown or Casa Mission – located on Av. 30 between Calle 2 and Calle 4, just north of the Super San Francisco grocery store. Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. True local and traditional Mexican food at a budget everyone can afford! My favorite is the Mexican combo plate!

We ate at some from Christi's list and were not dissapointed... might I also add 2 absolutly fabulous places we ate at from recomendation of the people we stayed with.

**Tio Jose’s Café and Grill on Avenida 11 between 65 and 70. For some reason all 4 of us decided to have pasta dishes of different sorts that night and they were all awesome, they all came with garlic bread. The guacamole was rich and creamy with what I thought to be Parmesan cheese on top. Delicious!!

*La Delicia which is near the corner of Calle 5 and Avenida 40. If you are going down Calle 5 it is 3 streets past Avenida 30. look to the right hand side you will see it. They had some of the hardest chairs I ever sat in in my life (not very comfy) but the food was outstanding. It is French and we had no idea what we were ordering. We got some type of ham and cheese toasted warm sandwich. Sorry not sure what it was called. We got a crepe with Kaluha, ice-cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce for desert. I wanted to go back and try more crepe's the next night but they must have closed early.

I would also add La Perlita to the list. It's a small place very much off the beaten track (it's near El Moro). Their seafood is excellent; try the pulpa in su tinta!

And Capi Navigante. It's a little pricey, but their Shrimp Capi (grilled tableside in butter, garlic, orange juice, brandy, and Pernod) will bowl you over. Their stuffed squid is sublime.

And La Morena, another great place for seafood; sort of a spinoff from Capi.

Thanks Martha(and everyone else) for posting this info. We ate at several of the places listed, most often at Casa Denis, was dads favorite, and was good place to sit and enjoy food and drinks while talking about days dive and people watching.

But this list gives me more places to try on next visit, and another reason to hurry back :D

Christi's restaruant list a great source.

Personal fave's are Rock-n-Java, Prima Pasta, Guito's, French Quarter, Casa Denis to name a few.

BTW if your looking to eat healthy, Rock-n-Java has a wider selection of really good healthy dishes than you can find on most menus in the states.

Got back yesterday. Especias still has not reopened yet. Saw Adrian at Casa Dennis on Sunday and he said he's still working on getting reopened. La Choza had a sign posted to be closed Saturday & Sunday for some repairs, but when I went by Monday they had not reopened and it looked like work was still being done.

A couple of our favorites:

La Parroquia - on 10th behind the Plaza & church, up on the 2nd floor. Great Lime Soup!! Nice for a light but hearty lunch after a morning of diving.

Sabores - on Ave 5 between Calle 3&5 - a little lunch spot run out of a home. Only open Mon - Fri 11-4. Very inexpensive. Lunch automatically includes a bowl of soup and a pitcher of agua fresca. Everything was wonderful. (I love the thin sliced pork-chops!!)

The list is a great source but don't discount going to Kelley's.....not all Mexican but a great time.

My best experiences are with the locals. Look for Pastor Stands and small places that are busy.

A place I really like is is owned and run by "Donny" who has worked for Papa Hogs for years (yes he is still there too). He can be found in the evening accross the street from the community sport field.

Enjoy the friendlyness of Donny and his wife,Cream Soda Negra and traditional Mexican take out....

"Dinning" is one thing, eating great mexican is another. Donny's Sopes are fantastic as well as the hamburguesa's.I really like Donny,he is hard working and an all around nice guy. You can talk to him in the "cave" at Papa Hog's...where Pelagic was last year.

We tried Miz Dollars when we were there in January after one of the locals suggested it. It is about 2 blocks back from Prima. We went there two nights and both times the only other people eating there were locals. It was great. Food is as good as Casa Denis and dinner for two.....$14.00.
