Went to Folly cove on Saturday. 8-14
2 tank dive

got in @ 10:50 dove the left wall all the way out and around the bend to the left. vis was good 18-20ft

temp was nice down to 30 ft 30-to 60ft lips got cold
but the rest was ok in the 7mm.

very nice day for diving lots of bugs and bass.

the beach had about 30 people on it

the only bad thing was the dead sea otter that was stinking up the beach...and man did it stink.

something took a big chunk out of it back and side.

Are you sure it wasn't a seal pup? I've been there before when a small seal washed up on the beach.

Curious as to what it was that took a big chunk out of it, though...

Hey Gabe,
I was sitting right behind you at the beach. Would've said hi but i didn't realize it was you (just looked at your profile pic).

Anyway next time i'll be sure to chat.

We sure did get a good day for diving though :)

there was a lot of fur on it. and i could make out the hands
and fingers ....

dont know about the chunks out of it ....
nothing to big .... i would say the chunk missing was about
5' across ...... if it was a large shark .. im sure there would have been noting for us to see lol :jaws:

I had a great dive on Saturday, also.
Went out along the left wall to the point but did not go around it.
Visibility was 25 feet when we entered at 9:30 a.m.
Water was colder than I expected, 45 degrees, but it was still a great dive.
One thing for sure, though, when entering the water at low tide at this site, those darn rocks sure are slippery.

I was just behind you to the left if you are looking out into the cove. It was just myself and my girlfriend.

P.S. Where was your flag ;)

ohhh yeah i did see you ...hummmmm the flag
thats a good point.... ummmm hummmmm ohhhhhh.

im asking my girl to get me one for x-mass :)

i know i know its bad...

and the rocks are killer rocks....... i went down about 4x ....

Yeah,
I'd be careful going out without one for several reason (of which i'm sure you're aware of the obvious).

When your outside the cove at Folly around all those traps, not only are you in danger from boats taking you out if you surface, but if some p$#ed off lobsterman saw bubbles coming up next to the pots and no flag he may start to think that you're not using a flag for a reason and then who knows what he'd do.

We (divers) have a bad rap with the lobsterman as is, so i'd suggest you do what you can to buy/borrow a cheap flag on your dives.

Hi All,
This is my first post - been lurking for a while.
I'm in the midst of my Advanced Open Water cert, and had my first ever shore and night diving experiences at Folly Cove Sat night 8-14. I have to admit that was the hardest I have ever had to work for a dive -- yeah, I am a warm-water boat diving girl... Those slippery rocks (at low tide) almost did me in - had the requisite "I've fallen and I can't get up" moments. But my buddy (the fabulous Malissa), instructor (TX Joe B.) and classmates (intrepid Jim & Alex) were very patient and encouraging, and by the end of the second dive, I made it back up the shore on my own with full gear on.

The weather was a bit wonky - very warm and humid - with 55 degree water so had some major foggy mask issues on both dives which sure made the natural navigation and night dive an extra challenge ;)

Note to the two helpful divers my buddy and I ended up with instead of our group at one point during the night dive --thanks for sorting us out! Does everyone up here wear the same grey & black Mares fins for gosh sakes?

So aside from being a bit disoriented and having buoyancy issues since I couldn't really see the bottom (until I ran into it!), I did manage to see a bunch of beautiful starfish and some big bugs and skates - looking forward to a less "foggy mask" dive so I can see what the heck you all rave about up here.

I ache in places I didn't even know existed, but I feel great since I kept my head and didn't give up when things got uncomfortable

Any hints for getting in and out over those slippery rocks sure would be appreciated...
Ann
