Saturday, January 6, buddy Jeff and I headed out to Folly Cove for an early morning 1st dive of the year. We arrived at the site at 8:30 – Geared up and ready to dive by 9:00.
Air temp – mid 60’s
Water Temp – 46°
Surface conditions – Like glass
No Current
Vis – About 40’
Not your average January dive by any means. We did 55 minutes out and back along the left wall. It was so comfortable! We spotted a large school of Pollack, several lobsters, and all the regular inverts and small fish. There was also a very well defined halocline at 20’, I assume from rain run-off.
Unfortunately we only had time for the one dive. I’ll have to try and get back next weekend for another.

Did you dive wet or dry?

I was thinking of dragging out my gear for a dive or two, wondering if it would be worth the cold. (wetsuit only) From your drescription, it would have been well worth it. DRATS!

Thanks for sharing though. Next warm day, maybe I'll actually do it.

Al,
Sound like a great dive. Any others diving while you were there?

I would be shocked if someone could tolerate 55 minutes in 46 degree water in any wetsuit. You would be chilly in a drysuit (feet/hands anyway).

Saturday was the first time we have seen other divers during winter shore dives in more than a year. We always dive Cat unless the seas are too rough or if there is snow/ice on the rocks. We were at Cat and there were two divers there when we arrived then 3 more that arrived on a boat.

The conditions were awesome though....warm air temp and great vis below. There were a few rollers to deal with on the exit but no big deal.

Eileen,
Diving wet on a day like last Saturday would be do-able if you were of the "well insulated body type" But even then, I can't imagine tolerating a dive in excess of 20 minutes or so.

Pat,
There was just one other pair of guys that were just gearing up when we got out. BTW, what's up for this weekend?

I managed 20 minutes in 38 degrees once, and it was the most miserable experience of my life.

Somehow, 46 degrees just sounds so much warmer! But you are correct. It would not be fun.

Is it summer yet?

Thanks for the report!

Arrgghh I miss the feeling of cold water on my face & numbness in my fingers. I have to get back out there soon! Probably wont be till end of Feb for me, though.

Looking to book a seal dive charter in the near future as well. Anyone know when they might start running?
