One of the things I don't like about that light is that it has a very defined line of light at the edge and the Sola tapers off softly. Much more naturally and also with no hotspot.

Pardon my stupidity here, but is the primary purpose of a focus light to improve focus speed while shooting video? I'm curious because I'm building out a D7000 setup (primarily for stills) for an upcoming trip to Truk and want to be sure I'm being realistic with what I believe my kit NEEDS are. I'm planning for housing, ports, and 2x INON Z-240 strobes. Should I also be trying to budget for a focus light? Hoping not but want to be sure.

Thanks,
-E

FYI: The i-Torch Mini Pro does have three light levels, just twist the body. They have done a good job in feathering the edge to make a useable video light. In addition to the red filter there is an available pop-on diffuser.

E-diver: There has been a blurring of lines with still cameras now shooting HD video, as you know. So yes originally you just needed a light to help your camera/lens grab focus. Personally the "focus light" on my camera is my focus light/video light/primary night dive light. So budget and how much video do you want to shoot should be taken into account when choosing a "focus light". In a perfect world a light in +700 lumen range is an excellent start. Will be great as a focus light, fair for medium to macro video (many caveats here), and decent night dive light in general conditions. Of course more is better when it comes to lighting.

Remember many of the "old" C8 torches we all carried were only in the 250-400 lumen range. Of course differences in beam width, color, etc....but we all made due.

Cheers for the heads up on the Mini Pro (both here and on Wetpixel :-) ), will have to see if theres a Uk stockist. Still hoping someone can give some input on the Sola500 which is also in budget. Would be great to try them all side by side but unfortunately Im having to rely on everyones experiences on the forums.
