We will be flying into Cancun this trip and out of Cozumel. Thinking about staying on the mainland 2 or 3 days before heading on over to Cozumel for the remainder fo the trip. We have 10 days total.

Where do you suggest for the first leg of this trip? Considering Isla Mujures, Cancun and Playa. May hit Chichen Itza one day and dive one day.

Glad you brought this up. I'm looking into mainland plans for the first time, too. Plan to dive Tortugas Reef out of PDC one day - amazing how many turtles you can see on one dive, and Cenotes one day. You'd probly get better answers on the mainland forum, but then I bet you get several here. I'll be watching for the no-frills suggestins. :D

Wow..three drastically different places. If you want nightlife and really being able to go out on the town, Cancun is definitely the choice. Cocobungas is one of the wildest clubs I have been to anywhere.

Isla Majures is about the opposite. A fishing village, its much more quiet and reserved. While I wasn't there, it was probably similar to what Cozumel was prior to the cruise ships showing up. I don't remember much nightlife at all, it seemed like after dinner the place shut down.

I've never stayed in Playa, but in the resorts along Riveria Maya. All inclusives resorts. Lots of fun too. I enjoyed going down to XCaret, which is where I did one of my first discovery dives.

It totally depends on what you're looking for, but if I were on the mainland for a couple of days, I'd stay one night in Valladolid for a chichen itza visit, and dive a couple of cenotes, staying somewhere down near them, maybe near Tulum. I'd avoid Cancun like the plague, but that's just me.

pdc is close to your dive needs Reef's or cenotes, If just ocean dives cancuan, Pdc has the option of the land tours north or south a little.

Are ther places to stay that can be had for $65 per night in Playa. On the water? I can get that on Isla Mujeres.
Not looking for night life. Just a place to sit and sip on a cervesa or 2.

Playa would be closer to Cozumel once we head on over to Cozumel and also closer to cenote's. But the little island sounds interesting and laid back and also has some diving. A wreck where lots of eagle rays hang out. Decisions, Decisions.

I'd recommend Akumal on the mainland. Convenient to dive the cenotes--good snorkeling there too, and also a good spot to go from to see the ruins.

There was a detailed trip report for Isla Mujeres recently on the Texas Swamp Divers site. It can be found at the link below.

On our last trip to Cozumel, we did a two tank boat dive to PDC. The first was Tortugas, which was ok, but not a dive I would go out of my way to do again. The second site was much more to my liking, but the name escapes me at the moment. I've never stayed in PDC (just visited for the afternoon/evening), but I've pondered staying there for a few days in the future to dive the Cenotes.

I'll be looking forward to hearing about your trip.

I'm curious as to why you didn't like Tortugas? I've done it once and the countless turtles was wonderful. Can't get a Coz Op to go there often - depends on the waves I'm told.

Did you run across the tarpon? Last year we did that dive and came up on a school of hundreds of tarpon, some of them easily 100 lbs or more. If you hung motionless and let the current carry you, you could drift right in amongst them. It was spectacular!
