Hello,

I am looking to go to Cozumel July 15 thru the 19th and I can save over $200 a ticket by flying in to Cancun. Has anybody done this? How long would it take me and cost to get over to Cozumel if I was to do this? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, James

You would need to take a 45 min trip to Playa Del Carmen and then take the ferry to Cozumel (approx another 45 min ride). I am not sure what the bus ride costs but the ferry costs about $12. Once you arrive in Cozumel you will need to take a taxi to your resort (taxi's can cost quite a bit more than what you pay at the airport to get to your resort). Here is a link that you will find useful: Ferry Schedule.

Regards,

Bill

I've done it. You can take a bus or a taxi to Playa and then hop the ferry over. It's easy, but you should probably count on it taking about 2 hours altogether including the ride and ferry.

I budget 3 hours from when I clear customs, especially if your trip is in the off season (like mine in October) and they cut back on the number of ferries going back and forth.

The other option is on Mayan air, which is a small plane ride over. Flights were on the hour, and took about 20 minutes.

If you elect to go through Cancun, then make sure you schedule your return flight for later in the day. You have to get up, get ready, eat breakfast, get to the ferry, 45 minute ferry ride, get from ferry drop to bus pickup, 45 minute bus ride from Playa to Cancun airport, check in and clear security. I don't believe the time coming in through Cancun is necessarily the same as time required to leave via Cancun. Have not done the bag drag in a long time so maybe someone else here can give you a decent estimate on time needed to make sure you catch the flight home.

I flew into Cancun for my trip in April, but I didn't take the ferry. Once I landed I took the airport shuttle to terminal 1 and flew into Coz. It was a 15 minute puddle jumper in a ~15 seat plane. I don't really remember the cost differences but I was pretty happy with the plane. It's probably worth looking into.

It's easy and cheap to go from Cancun airport to Cozumel, here's a step by step of the process with pictures:

Cancun to Cozumel

It's also possible now to take the puddlejumper flight, I've done this the last few times and it's really nice to leave Cancun and be in Cozumel in 20 minutes:

Maya Air

If your trying to save money, 200$ each then the 75$ each with no excess baggage fees spent on the Mayair trip will net you a saving of 250$ approx. But you will usually get to Coz a lot quicker on the Mayair flight. If you are bringing dive gear and other luggage you will get costs at Mayair.
If this is your first time to Coz then the adventure on the bus or cab to Playa del Carmen is fun. Seeing all the sights at Playa going to the ferry dock is a blast the first few times.
When you get off the bus there are bicycle porters hanging out to take your stuff to the ferry. I have never asked others what they pay but I give the guy ten dollars for three bags and they seemed good with that. You can walk behind them through downtown to the ferry. Sometimes if you dont have much you can ride on the bike front with them. Thats fun.
But like stated before I reserve 3 hours for this leg. It's usually less. And as also stated make sure your return flight is late in the afternoon, it's easier on you. Again 3 hours return but you need to take into consideration the time for check in and security stuff. So at least 5-6 hours before your flight leaves you should be boarding the ferry. There are accidents that jam the highway once in a while, thats the crap shoot. have fun. kev

I'd say that's a maybe. We had 2 checked bags each, + a carry on and weren't charged anything addition. the bags were under 50 lbs.

Also look at "multiple destinations" when booking your flight. You can fly down to CUN and when you leave fly out of CZM and potentially still save the $200 per and not have to do the ferry ect on your way home.
