If anyone is looking for fall flights from the NYC area to Curacao, best that we could find was Air Jamaica JFK-MBJ-CUR. Departure from JFK is 7:30a and departure from CUR on the return is 3pm. With tax & fees in Oct it's around $600, depending on days.

I haven't rebooked any air yet. Haven't canceled my Habitat res either (final payment isn't due until Aug and I would still get a full refund). I'm leery right now of anything that involves connecting in the Caribbean. And since we weren't paying for air originally, adding $1200 and doubling the travel time is something we have to weigh out and decide if it's worth it for 6 days there.

Air Jamaica JFK-MBJ-CUR.

We have made that flight a few times without incedent, but like the Continental direct flight better. We are going to CUR 8/9 to 8/23 (made it just before the shutdown).:14:

They say it will be back on the schedule Dec 20th, but I sort of doubt it will remain past the holiday travel season...

Have a GREAT trip! Enjoy the non-stop while you can still get it.

I suppose the upside to going back to not so easy Curacao air travel is that it won't grow too much in popularity and hopefully the reefs stay in their current condition. ;)

scubawife, we just booked those Air Jamaica tickets from JFK for coral spawning (Sept). Thanks for raising the point about connecting in the Caribbean as a point of concern. My mind was all focused on Curacao being outside the hurricane belt, but of course Jamaica is not... so I guess I'll be buying travel insurance after all. Yes, it does really suck that Continental doesn't fly there in the fall. And American's flight from Miami has a really crappy schedule (arriving in CUR something like 7:30pm and leaving CUR at 7:30 am).

I just called Continental yesterday - I had flight booked using Onepasss miles PDX-EWR-Cur for November - and the woman I talked to was extremely helpful and willing to book me on a flight ANYWHERE in the Caribbean that COntinental flies for no more miles, as long as they had a seat for me - not just a saver frequent flyer seat. I didn't decide right away - maybe a mistake - but she said she noted it in my records what we had talked about. I am stlll set on Curacao, so I fly into Aruba or Bonaire - they still list those flights - and take an inter-island flight for about $150 R/T. Or else maybe go to Roatan or Cayman. I did find it interesting that Continental had not notified me of the changes - just left my R/T to EWR as my reservation. When I asked the gal about that, she said the flight had just been cancelled that day - YESTERDAY! But this thread is 2 weeks old. Maybe I cannpt trust what she told me - I better book my changes right away.

They canceled service from the US to CUR between Aug 30-Dec 20th about 2 weeks ago, so she lied to you about that... but at least they were willing to do something for you. I hope you got her name, and definitely decide and BOOK IT IMMEDIATELY AND MAKE SURE YOU GET EMAILED CONFIRMATION OF EVERYTHING, then keep checking it. I wouldn't trust them for nothing now! I was nice as could be and just wanted to secure a flight to Aruba for the same dates at the same miles. No go. I would have to use 60K pp each way. They refused to release the seats for the original 30K we had to Curacao.

Wasn't thinking of weather. AA and Air Jamaica have both announced that they're looking at cutting their inter-island service within the Caribbean. My hesitation to book was that by the time Oct rolls around, I didn't want to be back in the same situation of not having flights again.

After September 1, 2008 AA will only have one flight departing MIA to CUR, and CUR to MIA. As they have the substantial market on this territory, they will not be canceling the only flights left. They just can't afford half empty airplanes flying back and forth anymore. This affects all the other airlines as well. I really would not worry about your flights after this time ... since they will not let you book any other way. At least with AA, that is ... and they don't fly inter-island service. I cannot tell you much about Air Jamaica ... only that they have many delays, so just build that into your time schedule.

AA has only discontinued their morning flights from Miami to CUR that use to leave at 10:15AM. Now they only offer the afternoon flight that departs at 4:40PM

AA has only discontinued their afternoon departures from Curacao to Miami, which use to leave at 2:15 PM. Now you only have one choice to leave at 8:15 AM.

I use AA quite often, so this is disappointing.
This is a direct reflection of the cost of fuel!

I hope to see this change during the holiday season.

Just got off the phone with Continental - different woman than I spoke to on Friday but still perfectly willing to accommodate me on changing my PDX-CUR reservation to PDX-Aruba, even changed the dates! SP, Scubawife, try them again - maybe they decided to be more agreeable. My original tickets were also with Onepass miles.
Good Luck

The onyl good news is that most Hotels in the smaller islands that require smaller planes to get to will be cheaper to offset the rising cost to get there.

Its only natural.
