In September, a Philippines newspaper had an article about a ship that had foundered and was resting in 18 flagpoles of water in the sea. I was returning from yet another fantasy trip, diving in their seas. (see my photos tagged to sig line)

We all know Fathoms and we saw recently discussed "fanthoms", but all I could find on the internet was this:

[PDF] ADDITIONAL MILITARY LAYERS File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat
Flagstaff (Flagpole): A staff or pole. on which flags are raised. ... Units are specified in the ‘Units of Depth Measurement’ [DUNI] subfield and ...
www.hydro.gov.uk/content/addAttachments/AML/Product specs/ESB Prod Spec v1_0 [NATO app].pdf - Similar pages

It was waaaay too many pages to sort through.

Any one know about this term? Who uses it, where did it come from, etc?

well, here in New Orleans, I was watching 3 engineers from the Corps of Engineers standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. Then this blonde headed lady passed by and asked, "what ya doing?" The engineers replied they are trying to figure the height of the flag pole. The lady then grabbed a wrench, loosened four bolts on the stand and lowered the pole to the ground. She then took out a tape and measured the pole. She then proudly announced the flagpole was 67 feet, 7 inches and walked off.
The Engineers looked at each other, scratched their heads and laughed. I heard one of them loudly comment,,"just like a blonde, we need the height and she gives us the length."

Maybe a mistranslation of a depth in "rods", which are 16.5 feet ?????

A rod is related to fathoms by both being subunits of a chain. A chain is 4 rods or 11 fathoms. Clear as mud. Right?

Too bad she didn't get out her protractor and measure the angle from their shoes to the top of the flag pole, then measure the distance from the pole to them. That would have showed them...:D
