I'd like to start a weekly fish ID quiz for fish in the Caribbean. I'd love to cover the Pacific too but I've never been there and couldn't ID many of them myself! (Fergyjohn...how did you do that?)

I've been facinated by the many colorful fish we see when diving and have been learning to identify them and their behavior ever since I started diving. I hope I can help some of you learn them too. Beast is happy calling them little blue (or yellow, red, striped, etc) Caribbean fish but that's not close enough for me!

So here's the first one. I'm sure you'll remember this one, if only from the bites it gave you!

You REALLY want me to answer that? :D

But you're right...this forum doesn't really use subject lines so just put it right here!

I'll edit my post to avoid confusion.

Dee,

Color is a difficult issue when identifying fish from photographs, but at first glance, I thought it might be a Dusky Damselfish. However, the dorsal fin has that funny split at the back end. I cannot remember ever seeing a damsel with such a split. But my memory is not what it used to be...

Joewr...

You're right...damsels don't have a split dorsal fin. This is the first one I've seen. At first I thought it was caused by an injury but the spines of the fin are actually at a different angle.

Maybe I found a new species!
