We can’t figure out what these little guys are! Any ideas?

In decades of diving the Caribbean I've seen them only a very few times, always at night. A great find.

Nice ! I’ve only seen one Black Brotula - and it was in Bonaire.

I have only seen it once in Tobago, in a hole under a coral bummie. I was hovering really low, just a few inches above the sandy bottom, waiting for dust to settle so I could take a good clear picture of the fish (there were 2 of them).

After a few minutes of waiting, my group realized that I was missing in action. Luckily my dive buddy turned around & looked for me. He saw bubbles coming out of that coral bummie & found me taking copious pictures of the fish. He also did the same.

In the end of the dive, I got unhappy stares from my dive group who were waiting on the skiff. DM wasn’t too happy either. I apologized copiously. That was in 2013. Looking back I was glad I took it. Since then I have not seen it again.
