My family will be visiting Bonaire in January 2016 (one day stop via cruise ship). My husband and I want to dive, but we will be traveling with my parents and 6 year old son (and none of them will be diving). Any suggestions/advice, on a good shore dive for us where they can have a beach day? Hope this isn't a silly question, but we have never been here before. Also, any recommendations for dive shops to rent gear? We have dove Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Nassau - all multiple times previously. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You're going to moor at Town Pier downtown. Any of the beaches are too far to walk from there. Probably what you want is a resort with a beach and on-site dive operator - depending on your arrival/time in port you could do boat dives also.

There's a few beaches on Bonaire (about 1/2 dozen) but literally there's no facilities at any of them and very little shade. Except the kitesurfing beach at Lac Bay which is too shallow to dive.

Dive Friends has a shop a few blocks north of the pier (too far to walk). There's a couple of paid guides on Bonaire - VIP Diving or BasDiving - you might see if they have other options. Another option could be dive at one of the resorts with a beach. There's a couple of those.

One decent option could be the Divi Flamingo. It's just south of the pier - actually an easy walk. They have a small beach - restaurants, a small casino etc. Divi Flamingo Beach Resort - Attractions Near Divi Flamingo Beach Resort And Casino The brown stuff in the water could be ironshore or coral rubble though so at least surf shoes are required for the beach-goers.

IDK their walk-in arrangements but we've eaten there w/o any fuss. They have their own dive operator (Divi Dive) on-site - depending on your arrival it should be possible to get out on a boat - at least their single tank afternoon dive if you wanted. Book that in advance with them - most shops on Bonaire have sign-up boards so they'll add your names if you call. There's a decent shore dive there also. The Divi is currently undergoing renovations and one of the things mentioned to be improved was the beach. As of last month it still hadn't been according to another poster.Diving Flamingo - Bonaire Dive Resort - Diving

A little farther south - too far to walk - is the Plaza Resort. They have a nice beach but IDK their walk-in policy since it's gone AI. Maybe they have a day use rate. There's a beach in front of Coconut Crash bar that's usually pretty busy (volleyball etc.) Their shore dive is 18Palms on the north end but their boat operator is Toucan Dive on the south - it's about a 10min carry. At least they stage tanks there. Toucan had nice rental gear last time I noticed. https://www.plazaresortbonaire.com/en The parents/kid would find enough to do.

Just north of town - too far to walk - Den Laman/Sand Dollar condos share a small beach - both have dive operators on-site. Bonaire Dive/Adventure is there also - we've rented from them on a daily basis. Bonaire Dive and Adventure Dive Friends is also at Sand Dollar but their boats are kept at their Yellow Sub location on the north end of town. The beach is on Bari Reef - one of the better known dives on Bonaire. There is a restaurant on each property and a couple others nearby also. http://www.bonairepros.com/images/uploads/accommodations/3 x 2 Den Laman 2-1.jpg The area where those two cars are parked is just north of an area supposedly being transformed into a public concession beach this year but I don't know the current status. That's definitely cab/car rental distance.

Arguably the other nice beach/resort on Bonaire is Harbor Village - the nicest on Bonaire. But their shore dive is meh at best, a small wreck and coral rubble deposited from the last hurricane. It's pretty upscale and IDK if they do day rates.

Unlike Cayman there's maybe a dozen cabs on Bonaire. I think you can pre-book one here: http://www.bonairetaxi.net/

hth, If someone suggests Buddy Dive - a really popular dive resort - they have sand - on top of 15' ironshore cliffs down to the water. So not exactly kid-friendly beach play.

I would add to Steve's very good list Wannadive at Eden Beach Resort. They have a beach club which looks like it caters to cruisers and I believe there was another one being put together immediately north of there as well. Their shore dive starts lame but as you head north you get to real reef. Based on BNMP rules you will have to do a buoyancy check dive with any operator and that will likely be the whole of your first dive. You will still see stuff. Essentially, you get in and if you can descend, you are correctly weighted based on every one I have ever done. Obviously, that is not sufficient but, does seem to be all they look at, if they pay any attention at all. I have dived with Dive Dive, Buddy and Wannadive. All are good. Checking out Toucan at the end of the month.

I agree with the Divi Flamingo, I really think that is your best choice for the short time you are on the island. The shore dive there is great and easy entry and exit off the Divi Dock, there is a nice swimming pool, new beach with chairs and umbrellas, restaurant and public bathrooms. The cruise ship should have information on a day package for your family. The dive shop is right there too. You can always contact them directly.Eden Beach is very popular with cruisers. There is a nice beach , dive shop Wanna Dive is great, there is a swimming pool there as well as a restaurant. The shore dive at Eden beach has some current, but easy entry and exit off the wanna dive dock.I hope you will enjoy your stay and come back and spend more time on Bonaire on your next vacation.

I agree with the Divi option. While I love Wannadive, the dive at Eden beach is IMO the worst dive on Bonaire, mostly rubble with little coral life plus you will need transportation to get there. Divi on the other hand is walking distance from the dock and has a nicer dive.

Dive friends has a shop right where the cruise ships dock... I know this because you can't drive to it when the ship is docked do to them shutting down the street to car traffic... They will dive on the reef (Town Pier) juts out from the cruise ship dock, Now I don't know if they dive that spot if a ship is in port.. We did our check dive at that shop on our first trip down.. Did the check dive at the other dive friends shop on "Kaya J.N.E Craane" (Something Special)... The closest dive friends shop is just south of the pier ( walk to the right after getting off ship ) the other is north of the pier and walking distance ... But , I would talk to the ship's event planner first as they may have deals already set up..
Have fun... ;)

Thank you ALL very much for the info!! Very helpful!!!! I wish our time in port was a little longer but still looking forward to our first dive in Bonaire. Thanks again!!!!

Town Pier has been closed to diving for years. Ever since the cruise ships started docking there. Which the OP is on so that's out even if you were able to somehow secure permission from the harbor master it won't be that day. Plus that dive was good at night when all the orange cup corals opened - I suspect there's been a lot of silt damage from the cruise ships maneuvering in on thrusters now.

I would agree with Herman, Eden Beach wouldn't make my top 25 list of best shore dives on Bonaire. The beach there is a little weird also post-remodeling - a lot of beach chairs in a small area and there's a 2' high concrete wall to keep it from eroding with a couple stairs down. Depending on the tide that's either into the water or onto about 10-20' of beach width. http://media.tui.nl/BD8/BD848A7B2584F79BF57C1931E75799C6.jpg It also seemed more European there than other resorts nearby IMO.

Wannadive is extremely accommodating though if you're looking for boat dives. They probably go right across the channel to Klein Bonaire also - probably so does Bonaire Dive/Adventure that I already mentioned.
