I am going spear fishing for the first time. We are going to Fenwick Shoals. Is a polespear good enough for my first try. Any other advice on this subject would help.

The fish on the shoals will be extremely difficult to catch with a polespear - with one exception... you may have luck trying to take a flounder from the bottom. Sea Bass, Tautog, Dolphin are hard to get with a polespear. While triggerfish would be a possibility, there is no sport in shooting a triggerfish and I discourage people from taking them.

I would recommend renting a nice speargun (non-pnuematic,) for your first attempts. If you don't know how to use it, take a class or at least have the shop you rent from go over usage and safety measures. The shoals are very low vis - usually less than 5 feet and you don't want to spear your buddy or another passing diver that you couldn't see when you released the spear...

Happy Hunting
