I am in the process of buying my first regulator and i haven't been able to answer this question through my research.

What is the importance/advantages of a first stage swivel/turret?
Why would you want one as compared to a static one?

Thanks in advance,

Oscar

PS. I'll thank all responses!!

It can give you more options and freedom for hose routing. If you don't need such flexibility, then you are probably better off without the turret.

My wife and I dive with both types of first stages. I use whatever is handy, normally some of my old dacor gear, and she uses a sherwood without the swivel option. She likes the simplicity and seems to have just as much fun as I do. I have been impressed with the new super flexible hoses which seem to eliminate much of the "pull" that some people get with standard hoses. For simplicity, and servicability, You cannot go wrong with a Sherwood product, [try an oasis], but that is just my two cents worth. Regards Scott

My SR1 reg allows me to have a transmitter for air and back up gauges. The first stage allows me to have more options on what hoses I want to dive with leaving room for backups.

The biggest benefit I'm aware of is that it's a lot of fun to watch a diver play with their swivel for the first time! They get a confused look on their face when they can't figure out why their breathing hoses and gauges are on the wrong sides! You'll see them turn the 1st stage upside down and try to attach it the cylinder that way to fxi the problem!

All kidding aside, I really like mine, but I honestly have seen divers totally confused by one!

so will you guys consider it crucial or something that is ok either way if you have it or not?

Not having it would annoy me, but it's certainly not crucial. I don't think I will ever buy one stationary but it comes down to personal preference.

Best to try the reg you want with and with out this feature. If you can not tell which one you are using then you don't need it and I wouldn't buy it. If you feel it makes it more comfortable then yea-get one.
