I've done some night diving up here in Idaho. On a cool night with all the snow around you can see all the mist coming up from the hot spring and all the stars up in the sky. Because of the poor visibility, it's not a whole lot different under the water at night as it is during the day, with the bad viz, except you can see the torch light!

I looked up Marsdens and saw they do the night dives. I am excited to come out and see if they have one going while I'm there.

Congrats on the diving at night. Hope you keep it up. That's something alot of folks (like me) can really get hooked on.

I've decided that the nice thing about diving at night here is that the water looks black, rather than murky brown. Plus most of the nighttime creatures don't move very quickly, whereas during the day the fish just flick their tails and vanish into the murk.

I can relate.....

except there are no critters here....

minnows and snails.................????.....

Sometimes the light just reflects off the muck.
One could question why I continue to dive low viz....

Oh...I would like an e-mail of people you know that dive there. I believe you were the one that mentioned that.

Sorry, Mudguppy, don't really understand your question

You can e-mail Marsdens directly on marsbros@pacific.net.sg. Or if you have a question that you want to put to someone who dives with them, send me a PM and I'll do my best. I dive with them regularly.

Hope that helps,

Zept;
My mistake. I re-read the posts......
Gotcha.

Why night dive? Can you even see anything without a flashlight?
I don't understand why it is an attraction to dive at night.
Can anyone explain this one to me?

thanks!

You see different things on a night dive. The daytime fish are sleeping, and nighttime fish such as cardinals are out and about. So are the crabs. Plus it's a test of your skills, because you have to be able to stop or turn within the range of your torch.

If you turn off your torch (or press it against your stomach, which is a better idea) and swish your arms about, you see lots of tiny flashes of light -- microscopic creatures phosphorescing.
