We are going on our first Nekton trip to the Caymans in Aug. Has anyone ever purchased traveller's insurance?

Yes, several times.

To expand on the question (I am going in late July to the Caymans) what is the risk of a hurricane in late July. All I can find is that it is late in the early part of the hurricane season???

There's not much more to add! If you looked around hard enough you could probably find a website somewhere that will give you a statistical probability of a names storm coming hitting or coming within a certain distance of the Cayman Islands but how does that really help you?

The forecasters certainly couldn't help you (especially after the last 2 seasons!) so my advice is and always has been that if you travel to the caribbean in hurricane season then you should have travel insurance.

Actually that was exactly what I was looking for. Gives a sense of what is likely, as opposed to possible.

Thanks, based on the hurricane data I had made the decision to self insure. I suspect if I had booked the same trip for October I might have made a different decision based on hurricane frequency in the area. But then I probably wouldn't travel to the Caymans in October.

Good article, made the same analysis that you made. It was cheaper to self insure over the long run and I travel often enough that it would add up very quickly.
